Calling Upon Leaders of All Parties To Condemn, Actively Discourage Political Violence
Wilsonville, OR – The Oregon Republican Party issued the following statement from Chairman Bill Currier in reaction to the attempted murder of Congressional Republicans in Virginia today.
“We are horrified by this sick act of reportedly politically-motivated violence against Republican Congressional members practicing for a Congressional charity baseball game,” stated Oregon GOP Chairman Bill Currier. “We are thankful that no innocent lives were lost and that our elected officials, including all our Oregon Congressional Representative and Senators, are safe. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims as they recover, and we commend the Capitol Police for their bravery and sacrifice in preventing a massacre.”
“It is a hallmark of our great country that we are free to have vigorous debates and strong differences of opinion without being subjected to violence. We have a Constitutional system of government to peacefully express ourselves and seek attention for our concerns that was made possible by the profound sacrifices of many Americans. We must rely on this system, and not on violence, as the way forward,” said Chairman Currier. “Those who would abandon it in favor of political violence and terror have no place in our society – and must find no safe haven within it. That means no excusing, no rationalizing, and no justifying political violence. To do otherwise is to enable it.”
“In this spirit, we call upon the leaders of all political parties and persuasions, and the media, to unite in strongly condemning, and actively discouraging, political violence by anyone within the reach of our collective influence,” added Currier.
“The City of Portland, the State of Oregon, and our Nation have seen enough political violence,” noted Chair Currier. “Instead, let us all focus on supporting, encouraging and protecting the energetic and peaceful expression of political views by all people, in a vibrant, open and safe manner. The future of our Republic depends on it.”
