As thunderstorms move through the district, crews are responding to reports of smoke as storms pass through about 7 miles up the Lostine Canyon Road possibly in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.
This smoke is located in the Lostine River area. U.S. Forest Service – Wallowa Whitman National Forest and Oregon Department of Forestry resources are responding and bringing in the La Grande Rappel Crew by helicopter to battle the fire.
While high winds are blowing in the canyon, the helicopter managed to drop two firefighters, including an incident commander to fight the fire.
A USFS employee said that resources were difficult to get to the fire because it occurred in the upper 1/3 of the slope in steep terrain with heavy dead and down timber and brush in the area.
