JOHN DAY, Ore – Representative Cliff Bentz (R-Ontario) has been appointed to the Senate District 30 seat, following yesterday’s vote of the 27 County Commissioners serving within Oregon Senate District 30 ( Baker, Grant, Harney, Jefferson, Malheur, Wheeler, and parts of Clackamas, Deschutes, Lake, Marion, and Wasco counties). The Senate District 30 seat was recently vacated upon resignation of Sen. Ted Ferrioli (R-John Day).

Rep. Bentz advanced to the Commissioner decision stage of the replacement process with two other nominees following a December 2nd convention of Republican Precinct Committee Persons (PCPs) within Senate District 30. Each PCP and Commissioner is given a weighted vote based on the number of registered Republican voters within their portion of the District. The seat must be filled by a Republican since Sen. Ferrioli is a Republican.

At the County Commissioner meeting, Rep. Bentz received 73.59 of the 84 total votes (88 percent), with Dr. Eric Wattenburg receiving 5.66 votes, and Suzan Ellis Jones receiving 4.66 votes.

Rep. Bentz, now Senator Bentz, will resign his current position as State Representative for House District 60 (which includes Baker, Grant, Harney, Malheur, and part of Lake Counties), and the process for appointing a replacement for District 60 will begin. All parties are hopeful that a replacement to fill Senator Bentz’s seat in the House can be found, selected and appointed prior to February 5th, the start of the 2018 Legislative Session.
